One of the largest and most colourful tilting contests in Europe can be experienced the second weekend in July every year in Sønderborg. The actual attraction, the tilting competition, takes place on Friday and Sunday. The tilting festival in its present form has existed in more than 100 years.
Every year about 500 riders men, woman, young and old -participate in the tournament. All riders leave Sønderborg Castle at 11.30 Friday and again Sunday in an impressive parade and ride through the streets of Sønderborg on their way to the tilting grounds. 3 large -international military bands and our local Sønderborg Garden accompany the riders. At the festival grounds you find many attractions and booths. There is also a flea market worth visiting.
On the last night of the tilting festival, all 3 Military Bands and Sønderborg Garden hold an impressive light-tattoo at the Sønderborg stadium. A tremendous fireworks display follows the tattoo.
